What is WHOIS and How to Use It to Check a Website

WHOIS and RDAP can show available domain registration details, such as creation date and registrar. Privacy rules, registry practices, and data availability vary, and these records cannot verify whether a seller is trustworthy.

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS (pronounced "who is") is a publicly accessible internet protocol and database that stores registration information for domain names. When someone registers a domain, their information is submitted to a registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.) and stored in the WHOIS database maintained by ICANN.

What Information Does WHOIS Show?

Domain Name: EXAMPLE.COM

Creation Date: 2019-03-14T10:22:00Z

Expiry Date: 2027-03-14T10:22:00Z

Registrar: GoDaddy.com, LLC

Registrant: REDACTED FOR PRIVACY

Name Servers: NS1.CLOUDFLARE.COM

Creation Date — when the domain was first registered. The most useful fraud-detection signal.
Expiry Date — when registration expires. Scam sites are often registered for just 1 year.
Registrar — the company through which the domain was registered.
Registrant — the person or organization that owns the domain. Often masked by privacy services under GDPR.
Name Servers — the DNS servers handling the domain.

What WHOIS Red Flags Look Like

  • Very recent creation date: A recent creation date can be a reason to check a seller more carefully, but legitimate new businesses also register new domains.
  • Registered for only 1 year: Registration terms vary and are not enough to judge a business. Check seller identity, policies, and payment protections separately.
  • Registrar country doesn't match claimed location: A UK store registered through a Chinese registrar with an obscure registration country is a warning sign.
  • Recent ownership change on an old domain: The creation date looks fine, but the Updated Date is very recent.

What Privacy Protection Means in WHOIS

After GDPR, most domain registrars offer privacy protection that replaces the registrant's personal information with the registrar's details. This is legitimate and widely used — it does not by itself indicate fraud.

However, privacy protection combined with a very new domain and missing SPF/DMARC is a stronger combined signal to take seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a publicly accessible database that stores registration information for domain names: who registered the domain, when, when it expires, and which registrar was used.

Is WHOIS always accurate?

Not entirely. GDPR allows domain owners to mask personal contact details behind privacy protection services. However, the registration date, registrar, and expiry date remain visible and reliable.

Can I find the owner of a website through WHOIS?

If the domain owner hasn't enabled privacy protection, their name and contact details may be visible. With privacy protection active, you'll only see the registrar's details.
